Visit These Crazy Rich Asians Filming Destinations on a Budget

on August 17, 2018 |
TRAVEL

The new Hollywood romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians just came to theaters and is already creating tons of buzz with its historic all-Asian cast and its stunning set of filming locations. We teamed up with TravelPirates to find the top filming locations in Singapore and Malaysia. Fortunately, you don’t have to be “crazy rich” to visit these gorgeous Southeast Asian countries, and budget flights and accommodations are readily available.

Singapore Changi Airport

Luckily all you’ll need to see this incredible airport is your plane ticket! Forget your usual fluorescent-lit food courts and overcrowded seating—Singapore Changi Airport boasts amenities like a swimming pool, free cinema, butterfly garden, and sleeping pods. Plus, they’re adding a massive indoor waterfall and 5-story garden next year. No wonder Rachel can’t believe her eyes when she arrives in Crazy Rich Asians. We think it’s the perfect way to start your trip in style!

Hawker Centers

Hawker Centers are Singapore‘s answer to street food markets. These centers are located across the city and feature a variety of authentic Asian cuisines, with classic favorites like Satay and Chicken Rice. Some stalls are even Michelin rated! Rachel and Nick head straight to the Newton Centre in Crazy Rich Asians for some street food with friends once they arrive in Singapore. Luckily for travelers you don’t need to be wealthy to grab a bite at these stalls—dishes will only set you back about $2.50 to $5!

Gardens By The Bay

This lush, futuristic park in Singapore serves as the striking backdrop of the movie’s wedding reception. Some areas of the park are free to enter, but we recommend shelling out the $5.80 for admission to the skywalk to get up-close-and-personal with the famous Supertrees. Plan your visit at night if you want to catch a free light and sound show!

Cheong Fatt Tze

This hotel in historic George Townin Penang, Malaysia is often referred to as “The Blue Mansion” for its bold blue walls. These distinct walls can even be spotted in the Crazy Rich Asians trailer, when Rachel has a pivotal scene with Nick’s mother Eleanor. But don’t worry, we’ve found this highly-rated hotel for as low as $118 per night! We think it’s well-worth the splurge.

Langkawi, Malaysia

This gorgeous archipelago of islands is accessible by an hour-long flight from Kuala Lumpur. It serves as the setting for Nick and Colins escape to “Rawa Island” during their bachelor party mishaps. Langkawi can serve as a great alternative to more expensive Southeast Asian beach destinations like the Maldives. It offers plenty of cheap yet luxurious accommodation and budget food options.
