The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the winners of the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards, where Hollywood’s finest gathered to toast the best in TV and film. First-time show host Jimmy Fallon led the star-studded event, which aired on NBC live from The Beverly Hilton. Meryl Streep was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Sylvester Stallone’s daughters, Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet, carried out their duties as Miss Golden Globe 2017.
Sweeping the movie awards was the musical La La Land, which broke the record for most wins by any one film. It won all seven of the categories it was nominated in, including a Best Actor statuette for Ryan Gosling, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for its auteur Damian Chazelle. The coming-of-age story Moonlight took home Best Picture, one of its six categories, while the August Wilson play adaptation Fences earned a nod for its female lead Viola Davis for Best Supporting Actress, which grossed $40.7 million at the box office.
On the TV side, Tracee Ellis Ross got a standing ovation when she won her Golden Globe. Ross, who won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (musical or comedy) for her role in Black-ish, is the first black woman to win in that category since 1983. The Night Manager took home three awards, more than any other, while The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, The Crown and Atlanta nabbed two apiece.
This year’s trophies were presented by an all-star list of celebrities including Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell, Naomi Campbell, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal, Goldie Hawn Nicole Kidman, John Legend, Chris Pine, Brad Pitt, Zoe Saldana, Sting, Carrie Underwood and Reese Witherspoon.
