
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners dominated the 9th Annual Astra Film Awards, taking home six top honors including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Michael B. Jordan, solidifying its position as one of the most celebrated films of the year and a major contender in the 2026 awards season conversation. The ceremony, presented by the Hollywood Creative Alliance on Jan. 9, 2026, at the Sofitel Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, drew industry attention as one of the first major film awards events of the new year.
In addition to Best Picture – Drama, Sinners earned Astra Awards for Best Original Screenplay for Coogler, Best Cast Ensemble, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson, giving Warner Bros. an early awards-season stronghold. The studio led the night overall with 11 wins across four titles, including One Battle After Another, which won Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Adapted Screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson,Weapons, which secured Best Horror Feature and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Amy Madigan, and James Gunn’s Superman, which claimed Best Action or Science Fiction Feature.
Netflix followed closely behind with multiple major wins, driven by the success of its animated global hit KPop Demon Hunters. The film captured three awards — Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song for “Golden,” and Best Voice-Over Performance for Arden Cho — highlighting the platform’s growing influence in both animation and original music categories. Netflix also earned Best Documentary for The Perfect Neighbor, Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for Adam Sandler, Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for Amanda Seyfried, and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for Ariana Grande.
Drama performances were another focal point of the evening, with Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet earning Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Jessie Buckley and Best Young Performer for Jacobi Jupe. Neon’s international drama Sentimental Value added to its critical acclaim with wins for Best International Feature and Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Stellan Skarsgård, reinforcing the growing prominence of international cinema in the global awards landscape.
The ceremony also honored a wide range of industry talent with special recognitions, including Mark Hamill for Excellence in Artistry, Sharon Stone with the Timeless Award, Elle Fanning with the Vanguard Award, Zoey Deutch with the Virtuoso Award, Wagner Moura for Acting Achievement, Park Chan-wook for Filmmaking Achievement, and Dylan O’Brien with the Game Changer Award, reflecting the event’s mission to celebrate both established icons and emerging voices in film and entertainment.
