Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB), the nation’s premier showcase for Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching bands, marked a historic milestone with its first-ever West Coast appearance at SoFi Stadium on February 1. The electrifying event brought together tens of thousands of fans, students, and alumni, celebrating the rich cultural traditions and talent of HBCUs. The HBOB Invitational Showcase, now in its 19th year, featured unforgettable performances from six top HBCU marching bands and dance teams, making this year’s showcase a memorable celebration of music, culture and legacy.
The event, held under the theme “Driving the Legacy of HBCUs,” paid tribute to the important role HBCUs play in shaping higher education and creating opportunities for advancement within the Black community. Honda, a long-time supporter of HBCUs, reaffirmed its commitment to fostering educational opportunities by awarding $50,000 grants to each of the participating schools. These grants are designated to support music education and career development programs for future HBCU students.
Nick Cannon, the multifaceted entertainer and entrepreneur, hosted the 2025 HBOB showcase, which featured stunning performances by Alabama A&M University‘s Marching Maroon & White Band, Alabama State University‘s Mighty Marching Hornets, Hampton University‘s The Marching Force, North Carolina A&T State University‘s The Blue and Gold Marching Machine, Southern University‘s Human Jukebox, and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff‘s Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South. Each of these institutions showcased the incredible musical talent that has long been associated with HBCUs.
GRAMMY-nominated recording artist GloRilla closed out the evening with an unforgettable high-energy performance that had the audience on their feet, further elevating the dynamic atmosphere at SoFi Stadium. The performances served as a reminder of the deep-rooted musical traditions that these bands continue to uphold, as well as the unique cultural experiences they bring to the forefront.
Honda’s dedication to advancing HBCU education goes beyond the showcase. In addition to the $50,000 grants, Honda also pledged a $500,000 contribution to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, underscoring the company’s long-standing commitment to supporting HBCU students. This grant will fund scholarships aimed at empowering the next generation of HBCU student-musicians, ensuring they have the resources necessary to achieve their academic and career goals.
Before the showcase, Honda partnered with the Black College Expo™ and the National College Resources Foundation to host a college and career fair at SoFi Stadium. The fair offered over 200 colleges and universities, including HBCUs, the opportunity to provide on-the-spot interviews, acceptances, and scholarships, totaling more than $10 million in opportunities for students.
Honda’s commitment to HBCU students will continue through its sponsorship of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge(HCASC), America’s premier academic competition for HBCU students. The 2025 HCASC National Championship Tournament is set to take place in April, further solidifying Honda’s dedication to fostering success in the HBCU community.
Since its inception, Honda has supported the success and dreams of HBCU students through initiatives like the Honda Battle of the Bands, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, and its partnerships with organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and National Urban League. These efforts have had a lasting impact on over 300,000 students, with more than $14 million in grants provided for HBCU education programs and campus improvements.
