Descanso Restaurant, the acclaimed modern taqueria originally founded in Costa Mesa in 2018, has officially made its mark on Los Angeles with the grand opening of its flagship location. Situated in the historic SAG-AFTRA Plaza, Descanso’s new home embodies the vibrant culinary and cultural spirit of the city. This milestone expansion signifies more than just a new address—it introduces an elevated dining experience that redefines how Angelenos engage with Mexican cuisine.
The Los Angeles flagship is a sprawling 9,000-square-foot space designed to captivate, accommodating up to 240 guests with a layout that seamlessly blends modern aesthetics and traditional Mexican influences. The restaurant features a striking central bar, a bustling main dining room, two inviting open-air patios, and the signature Plancha room—an interactive space where Descanso’s celebrated A la Plancha dining experience comes to life. Here, Planchero Chefs prepare multi-course meals right in front of guests at communal tables, infusing the room with the sizzling sounds and aromatic flair reminiscent of Mexico’s lively street vendors. For a more intimate culinary journey, the Private Plancha Room offers an exclusive Chef’s Table experience, tailored for up to 10 guests with bespoke menus perfect for special occasions.
The menu is a masterful fusion of Mexico’s rich culinary traditions and contemporary techniques. Standout dishes include the opulent Seafood Tower, brimming with oysters, poached lobster tail, Peruvian scallops, snow crab claws, shrimp cocktail, and ceviche campechano, all complemented by caperberries, morita cocktail sauce, cucumber-serrano mignonette, and fresh lemon. The Enchiladas de Langosta, featuring butter-poached lobster wrapped in tender tortillas, and the Taquitos de Camarón, crafted with marinated shrimp, blue corn tortillas, morita aioli, and mango-habanero salsa, showcase the kitchen’s commitment to bold flavors and high-quality ingredients. The Alambre, a guest favorite, allows diners to customize their plates with a choice of steak, al pastor, chicken, shrimp, or seasonal vegetables, paired with bacon, onions, bell peppers, tres quesos frito, avocado toreado, serranos, and micro cilantro, served with warm flour tortillas.
The centerpiece 38-seat bar is a showstopper in its own right, offering an array of expertly crafted cocktails that cater to every palate. Signature Margaritas Especiales include the classic El Descanso, featuring Milagro Reposado, agave, and fresh lime, and the bold Bad Hombre, a spicy concoction of Herradura Reposado, lime, pineapple, serrano, and a salt-and-pepper rim. Refreshing options like the Sandía-Rita and Cucumber y Sal add a playful twist to the cocktail menu. For agave enthusiasts, Descanso’s Casillero Club provides exclusive access to rare Tequilas and Mezcals, with members enjoying private locker storage for their spirits, priority reservations, first access to limited releases, and special culinary gifts during each visit.
Descanso’s commitment to authentic, high-quality Mexican cuisine extends beyond the plate. The restaurant prides itself on sourcing fresh ingredients from local farms, avoiding lard and canned products, and focusing on traditional cooking methods executed with modern precision. This dedication is evident in every dish, creating a sensory experience that captures the essence of Central Mexican street food within an elevated, contemporary setting.
With its bold flavors, dynamic atmosphere, and immersive dining experiences, Descanso Restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it’s a culinary destination that celebrates the artistry and diversity of Mexican cuisine. The Los Angeles flagship is poised to become a cornerstone of the city’s vibrant food scene, offering both locals and visitors an unforgettable taste of modern Mexico in the heart of Mid-Wilshire.
