There’s something about spending an afternoon at Pier 36 that resets your creative compass. That’s exactly what happened at Artexpo New York this April, when the Lower East Side waterfront transformed into one of the most vibrant art destinations in the city.
Now in its 49th year, the fair brought together more than 170 galleries, publishers, and independent artists across 70,000 square feet of exhibition space and the energy was palpable from the moment you walked in. Over 1,000 artists were represented, with work spanning paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glassworks, and more. Collectors from 24 countries made the trip, and according to organizers, attendance hit a record high this year.
The programming is what really sets Artexpo apart from a standard gallery crawl. The Spotlight Program shone a light on boundary-pushing galleries and emerging artists, while Art Labs offered immersive, large-scale installations you genuinely couldn’t look away from. A personal favorite concept: the Discoveries Collection- standout pieces curated by the Artexpo team, all priced at $3,000 or under. Accessible collecting, done beautifully.
One of the afternoon’s unexpected highlights was stopping by S-BRT Contemporary Art’s booth, where I had the chance to chat with the daughter of German artist Silke Bianca. Bianca, a renowned European Art Composer, was exhibiting her “Zen Garden Cycle I and II”, a meditative body of work that weaves Zen philosophy into interior-minded fine art. It’s the kind of work that makes you want to rethink your living room entirely.
Elsewhere, the buzz on the sales floor was undeniable. One exhibitor sold 23 pieces plus an entire kinetic art installation over the weekend. If you missed it this year, mark your calendar: Artexpo returns to Pier 36 next April for its 50th anniversary, and something tells us they’re going to make it count.
