MusiCares Hosts Iconic Women in Hip Hop Event with Saweetie & MC Lyte

MusiCares, the leading charity dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of the music community, hosted a powerful female-led event as part of their Humans of Hip Hop initiative. Held at Amazon Studios in Culver City, the event, entitled “She’s Iconic: A Salute To Women In Hip Hop,” featured an inspiring panel discussion with notable figures Saweetie, MC Lyte, Big Lez, and Sierra Lever, Head of Hip-Hop/R&B at Amazon Music. Moderated by Laiya St. Clair, the conversation delved into the significant role of women in hip hop culture, mainstream influences, mental health awareness, and the cultural biases women face in the industry.

The event was a significant highlight for Black Music Month, providing a platform for open dialogue on pressing issues within the hip hop community. Panelists shared their experiences, offering insights on perseverance and the importance of uplifting one another.

One of the central themes of the discussion was mental health awareness. The panelists discussed everyday wellness practices and the importance of mental health in the high-pressure environment of the music industry. This conversation is crucial in breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within the hip hop community.

In addition to the engaging panel discussion, MusiCares provided a hearing health activation, including custom earplug fittings for qualifying guests. This initiative is part of MusiCares’ broader mission to support the well-being of music professionals through a variety of services. From preventive care to emergency assistance, MusiCares acts as a vital safety net for those in the music industry.

The Humans of Hip Hop initiative by MusiCares is designed to address the unique needs of the hip hop community across the United States, with a focus on eight key cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles/Compton, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. Following a successful H3 event in Chicago featuring Common and Lupe Fiasco, the initiative continues to Oakland on June 24.

Coming out of May’s Mental Health Month and now into June’s Black Music Month, the event was timely and relevant, reflecting the ongoing commitment of MusiCares to the music community. The “She’s Iconic: A Salute To Women In Hip Hop” event not only highlighted the contributions of women in hip hop but also underscored the importance of mental health and wellness in the industry.
