Sky Lagoon Defines Wellness in Reykjavik, Iceland

on January 16, 2026 |

Reykjavík has emerged as one of Europe’s most compelling wellness and culture capitals, where geothermal traditions, contemporary design and Nordic cuisine converge against a backdrop of lava fields, sweeping ocean horizons and colorful city streets. At the center of this experience is the pairing of Sky Lagoon and Center Hotels, offering travelers an immersive way to explore Iceland’s capital while indulging in one of the country’s most elevated geothermal spa experiences.

Opened on May 6, 2021 by Pursuit, Sky Lagoon introduced a modern interpretation of traditional Icelandic bathing culture just minutes from downtown Reykjavík. Located in Kársnes Harbour, Kópavogur, the oceanside retreat feels worlds away from the city while remaining close to major landmarks, museums, shopping streets and the Old Harbour. Its dramatic setting along the North Atlantic frames glowing sunsets, wintertime northern lights and expansive dark-sky views, making it one of the most visually striking geothermal lagoons in Iceland.

Iceland’s geothermal bathing culture—deeply rooted in daily life and community—was recently added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, recognizing the centuries-old tradition of gathering in communal pools as spaces for connection, conversation and wellbeing. Sky Lagoon reflects the same cultural spirit honored by UNESCO, offering a contemporary and luxurious interpretation of the rituals that have shaped Icelandic social life for generations. Visitors are invited not only to relax, but to participate in a living tradition that blends wellness with human connection.

The design is quietly dramatic: a 75-meter infinity-edge geothermal lagoon appears to dissolve into the Atlantic, while turf-house inspired architecture and volcanic stone textures echo Iceland’s historic building traditions. Inside, layers of grey-blue, deep green, cream and soft metallic accents mirror the surrounding seascape and lava terrain, creating a minimalist yet atmospheric environment that feels both ancient and contemporary.

At the heart of the experience is the Skjól Ritual, a seven-step wellness journey rooted in centuries-old Icelandic practices that alternate heat, cold, steam and fresh air to rejuvenate the body and calm the mind. The ritual begins in the lagoon itself, where warm geothermal waters relax the muscles and quiet the senses. Guests then move through a bracing cold plunge inspired by Iceland’s historic Snorralaug pool, followed by Ylur, a dramatic sauna overlooking the Atlantic through Iceland’s largest single-pane window.

A cool mist chamber reintroduces crisp ocean air before guests apply the signature Sky Body Scrub, made with almond and sesame seed oils, to gently exfoliate the skin. Steam opens the pores once more, preparing the body for the final ritual element: Saft, a traditional elixir infused with krækiber, or crowberries, that grow wild across Iceland’s lava fields. The result is a deeply sensory journey that leaves guests feeling restored, grounded and connected to the natural elements. Skjól is now included for all visitors, while the Sér experience offers additional privacy through premium changing rooms and amenities.

Beyond the water, Sky Lagoon’s culinary offerings continue the slow-living philosophy. Gelmir Bar, tucked into a cave at the lagoon’s edge, serves Icelandic beers and local cocktails directly to bathers. Keimur Café offers light, nourishing fare including soups, sandwiches and regional specialties in a rustic setting designed for lingering after the ritual. Smakk Bar rounds out the experience with creative tasting menus inspired by the island nation’s flavors and seasonal ingredients.

The experience pairs seamlessly with a stay at Center Hotels, a family-run Icelandic hotel group rooted in the heart of Reykjavík. With nine centrally located properties, the brand places guests within walking distance of the city’s creative neighborhoods, cafés, museums, nightlife and harbor promenades. One of its flagship properties, Center Hotels Plaza, stands on Aðalstræti, the oldest street in Reykjavík, overlooking Ingólfstorg Square, a lively public space that becomes an outdoor ice rink during winter months.

The building itself carries deep ties to Icelandic media history, having once served as the headquarters of Morgunblaðið,one of the country’s leading newspapers. Today, its bright interiors, contemporary rooms and spacious public areas balance comfort with heritage, while its location offers effortless access to Reykjavík’s main shopping streets, cultural institutions, the Old Harbour and Harpa Concert Hall.

Evenings can be spent high above the city at Sky Lounge & Bar, located on the top floor of Center Hotels Arnarhvoll. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Mount Esja, Faxaflói Bay and the Harpa skyline, the lounge is a favorite for handcrafted cocktails, Icelandic beers and relaxed conversation as the sun sets over the water. In winter, it becomes one of the city’s most atmospheric vantage points for spotting the northern lights.

Together, Sky Lagoon and Center Hotels create a seamless Reykjavík itinerary: mornings exploring colorful streets and historic sites, afternoons immersed in geothermal waters overlooking the Atlantic, and evenings above the city skyline with a cocktail in hand. It is a pairing that captures modern Iceland at its best—where nature, wellness, heritage and contemporary Nordic style come together in one unforgettable destination experience.
